The 1st stage has a red rubber material on top of it. When you turn on your air on it bubbles up,and when you turn your air off it goes down. Is this normal? What happens when or if you get a pin hole in the red rubber piece? Keith

That's the cold water kit. All it really does is keep any water and junk off of the diaphragm. If you get a pinhole in it it's no big deal for 98% of the divers out there who don't really need it, but I'd take that top cap off after you're done and rinse it out.
A pinhole won't cause a leak or anything and you won't lose air. The Apeks regs have this cap too and all of the other cold water kit diaphragms.

Thanks Saxplayer, I couldnt figure out what would stop the air if you got a hole in it.

yup. There is air in there but it's not pushed in continuously, just a pressure differential. That cap is also pushed up some by the spring that's in there. So when you pressurize the system the diaphragm moves up and under that red thing there is a black T piece that sits inside the spring which also helps to push that red thing up and keep it sealed against the cap

Also, to get the cap off if it is too tight, you might need a spanner wrench. If it is metal, put a piece of material between the spanner where it makes contact with the environmental cap so you don't scratch the metal. Keeps it looking nice and not all scratched up.

it would take alot to puncture, its pretty tough material. Thick silicone substance. When the Envrionmental cap is unscrewed the red diaphram comes out easy.
