craracer has the etymology correct... it's called "Black" because that's historically when retail stores went from losing money to making a profit for the year. Red ink in the books is a debt or loss and black ink is a profit. It's meaning less and less these days with internet shopping but it will probably be called that forever, at least here in the USA. It'd be interesting to see when that date falls in other countries that are less bent on consumerism and how retailers accommodate that.
