In the true sense of DIR the standard would be to lash your SPG line to a bolt snap with cave line to protect in the case of an entanglement whereas it could be cut loose.
In your opinions would the Highland gauge with the built in bolt snap be advisable or just as safe?
Maybe I'm overthinking this.

I have found myself with the same concern, I love the idea but metal to metal connections also make me uncomfortable.
I guess for OW diving without any serious entanglement concerns it would be fine, for OH environments it may not be.

I use magnetic snap-on (see the red & black button, in the picture, below).

if you want to use it, and have concerns, they make a break-away "dogbone" for it.

Too ridged/bolt snap in wrong place for me. It makes me queasy to look at it........and I love metal stuff like that.

I tie my own. Easy to cut, easy to replace, and cheaper. They style you are talking about go for around $100. I use a standard 2 inch brass and glass, they go for roughly $60 to $70. Add a $4 dollar bolt snap and done.

It was mentioned earlier that it might not be as flexible and now thinking about it I agree with that statement. There are times when wearing stage cylinders that I really have to torque my hand and spg to hook it. If it were a fixed bolt snap I wouldn't have the ability to fasten it.

*edit for grammar*

"red" is a pivot
"blue" is a swivel

actually seeing one avoids speculation....

Is there a video of someone using one with one hand, wearing dry gloves/liners, in the water?
