Hi. Our family will be going to Cozumel next week.
We were wondering if besides doing the reefs
off Cozumel, we would also enjoy the reefs at
or near Playa del Carmen. Two of us are completing
scuba certification and the other two snorkel.
Thanks for any help.

The diving in Coz is a lot better.. Playa is better than winter but if you have a choice I would dive on the Coz side.

take a trip to the mainland and try xelha (chel Ha) for some of the best snorklin to be found. take your flip flops as the trails are gravel and you can just tuck em in your wet suit as you drift down the river into the cay. tons of fish. You might even try Hidden worlds cenote for a snorkel tour, undergound wonderlands! www.hiddenworlds.com

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Welcome Tammyf:

I agree with Tony above. Xel-Ha is a nice place to visit for a day. There is some nice snorkeling and many other diversions. When my family goes (and we will in March) we like to take Wednesday off from diving and take the ferry to PDC. A little further down the road are the ruins and they are very nice.

The diving in Cozumel is varied and you will be able to experience quite a variety if you talk your dive op in to where to go. Because there are new divers, there will be some limitations. Search the forum and you will find many descriptions of dives and their attributes.

I hope you and your family enjoy Cozumel as much as mine does. My wife does not dive, but she really enjoys the beach and someone bringing her something tropical and cold to drink.

How do you get down South, taxi, bus or rent a car? We arrive in COZ 1 week from today. We are taking one day off diving and heading to PDC.

IMHO, If you're already on Coz for diving, stay there. Unless you want to dive Cenotes, or see alot of turtles or you've run out of reefs and things to see in Coz., there is not a good diving reason for new divers to leave.

I stay in Playa and dive both PDC and Coz. because I know what both have to offer. The reefs seem better in Coz. I also, have easy access to the ferry and I am the only diver in our group.

Your on vacation, don't wear yourself out going to both. Trust me.
