An update: others (DIs) experienced in this particular quarry not surprised at what happened, seems to be rather a common occurence for things to go awry. They mentioned the thermocline at about 30m over the roadway which could well have caused the sudden feeling of an ice block chest. Four serious incidents last week: one CPR on the rescue jetty and helicoptered to hospital, two taken to the recompression chamber nearby, plus one other helicoptered to hospital. Perhaps the relative risk of accident is the same as elsewhere but appears to be higher because of the sheer volume of people diving there.

Am getting in the water again in a few weeks' time on a club trip to Sharm, together with fully apprised DI.
