Hi 8 Tape Rewinder

We have a housed Sony Hi 8 digital video camera that we use on dive trips. When we want to check the results, our principal option is to replay the tape on the monitor which eats up the batteries and takes forever to rewind. I've noticed some Hi-8 rewinders for sale various places. Are these safe to use or will they damage the video tape??

I never had a problem with the rewinders, it's always better to give the poor camera a rest.
I'd rather run a $20 rewinder than the $800+/-camera.
Back in the "early daze" of camcorders the cams didn't even have rewinds on them.
