um, not really as it applies to underwater...

The GoPro really is the least expensive part of an economy underwater camera package. Yes, a good housing can cost what the camera did. and then there are the lights. If you need a 200' rated housing, you will need lights. And lights that will actually work will cost what the camera and housing cost, per light, and a single light isn't going to work as you will need (at least) two.
I'm at the Gopro, with housing, and cheap lights. $50 worth of Amazon lights won't cut it. They were worth it as education in that I need 2 lights, and learning I need good lights. And I look at what my fellow divers have for camera rigs, the monster camera with arms that stretch 8 feet across. But there are others I dive with that have more modest camera packages. And the GoPro does fit into this. And there are good lights needed to make it work.
I bit the bullet and just got an IqSub 500' housing. Locks me into owning a GoPro 4 for a long time. But after loosing a Hero 3 due to a bad button seal on a GoPro housing (actual GoPro housing was fine, it was the cheap extended back door for the extended battery that failed) I wanted one and done.

um, absolutely better underwater - image stabilization and video bitrates are significantly better than the 7 (I have both).

Never heard of him - but, in every clip of his video, the 8 looked better than the 7 to me.
I’m not sure what issue he had with the jumpy video sequence as I have never seen that - maybe a firmware issue? He also had only used it for 2 days and not played with settings.
The stabilization in the 8 is better (noticeably less background movement) and available in way more modes than the 7. I like my Hero 7 - but I like my Hero 8 much better.
I also use mine in clear, tropical water - not lower viz/green fresh water - so maybe that is part of the difference.

I guess so - maybe a better monitor too? Color and contrast were a bit better in most of the 8 clips. It’s not dramatic - but I can see the difference.
