Very thorough and useful, although Henry admits to being selective in what he included. I was somewhat disappointed to see no mention of the public beaches just north of the airport road. I'm still learning my way around and my only transportation is on foot or by colectivo, but Google Streetview suggests these might be a bit more friendly than some of the shoreline closer to downtown.

Where did I admit to being selective to what I included? I do not believe I did, nor did I intend to be selective.

I did include all the beaches north of the airport. They would include -

Barracuda Beach Club
Islands Beach Club
Las Brisas
Playa Azul
Playa Casitas

Plus the pay-access beaches to the north, which includes -

Buccanos Beach Club and Grill
Tequila Beach Club

I think the one you are referring to is called Playa Casitas. It's not really an ideal "beach" but certainly can be used for swimming and snorkeling, as noted.

Under No Name Bar and Grill:

"This is another one that was dicey making the list as it is mostly a restaurant / bar. The ability to swim and snorkel downtown finally won over in my decision making."
.

I'm not saying that being selective is necessarily a bad thing; almost any list is going to be somewhat subjective. The minor point I raised by no means negates the overall usefulness of the post.

Perhaps I'm just not familiar enough with the location names. I was referring to those almost immediately north of the aiport road, not the northern hotel zone. I didn't recall seeing those in the maps.

Ah, okay on No Name. What I meant was actually the opposite. Rather than try to decipher if the location was a beach or a bar primarily, and thereby include or not the location, I'd simply include them all. I believe the only two I did not include at this point is Passion Island, which is boat-access only (and will get added once I can visit) and Rasta's, which you cannot swim or snorkel at. I should probably include it, too, and just note there is no swimming. Maybe my next lap I'll stop for a Coco Loco and take a few photos.

Playa Casitas is the beach across from the airport you are thinking of. It starts basically just north of the public boat launch and runs until you hit the President's home. You can sneak past the northern property line of the Presidents home and walk the shoreline north from there if you so desire, but if the President is visiting the last thing I need my blog to do is send an unsuspecting tourist sneaking past that property :)

Thanks for the clarification, although even that somewhat suggests that there are places that are primarily bars/restaurants with limited beach options that might not appear on the list? Again, that's not a bad thing, it's just useful to understand the scope.

Again, thanks. I haven't been up there yet, and probably wont for a few weeks. The Google Streetview photos from April 2014 (really wish they'd do a new survey) show a palapa bar/restaurant (Sunset) with folks obviously in the water, and another one that I can't make out the name of, as well as a couple of palapa structures with no obvious commercial enterprise. I assume the rock wall structure that goes from Melgar toward the water is the demarcation of the president's property. (No, really, Coronel! Henry said the President would love seeing my patriotic fireworks display on his beach ... why else would I have these, umm - what did you call them - explosives?! ) Do they raise a flag or something when the president is in residence?

Fair point. I'll go back in and edit to help clear that up.

The palapas have changed hands since 2014. One is now called La Monina but I'm not sure of the other. It just re-opened under a new name just a week or so ago. They've also built a church in the center of the street which won't appear on your Google street view. Yes on demarcation line of the Presidents house. There is rarely anyone there, but they've chased my boat away and wide from our normal daily path a few times when the daughter was visiting. New president in office soon - we'll see if they ever use it. If you head up that way you'll see a clearly worn path along the fence/wall which leads to the water. Local spear fisherman jump in the water there, but it's not anything I'd list as a publicly accessible beach.

Didn't realize Salty Endeavors was you! I've always enjoyed your input on ScubaBoard. Nice to see you've got your own op now. We will come and say hi in the future

I don't get around here so much any longer. I lurked a lot more when I wasn't busy running a business and being a new father. Give me a shout next you are out this way. Always happy to meet up!
