Need help identifying the manufacturer of my aluminum 80 with original date stamp of 6/87. No manufacturer name is on the tank

Markings are:

DOT-3AL3000 S80 M4002
A24667 6//87

There is two inch space between the S80 and the M4002.

Thanks

Just noticed the bottom of the tank is stamped "CAT CYL". A Catalina cylinder I presume.

The DOT Manufacturers Number (M-Number) "M4002" issued to Catalina Cylinders, Garden Grove, California facility (required mark).

Alloy: 3AL
Working Pressure: 3000 psi
Volume: S80
Manufacturer: M4002 (Catalina) as mentioned above
Tank's Individual Serial Number: A24667
Original Hydro test date (at time of manufacter): 6//87

Tanks must be hydro tested every 5 yrs with a new hydro stamp on the neck directly above or below the original stamp as space permits.
Additionally all tanks must be Visually inspected annually as well as an Eddy current test on all Aluminum tanks.

If no other Hydro dates have been stamped on this tank then theoretically it hasn't been used since at least June 1992.

Incorrect.

Incorrect.

Well almost......you should qualify that.

The poster was not entirely incorrect in posting that. Just because it is not a United States Department of transportation law, in itself, does not make it incorrect.

The same could be said for Hydros as well, under the correct circumstances, even within the United States.

So now I will through something out there. To the OP, as noted though the cylinder will need to be requalified (aka a hydro) if it is not current. However, as noted it will not need an eddy current test. Some will say you do but it is not required. Why? Because Catalina has always made its cylinders from AL6061. Only cylinders made from Al6351 such as those mfg by Luxfer are required to have an eddy current test be preformed as part of the re-qualification.

Now being in Florida you will probably have a hard time getting it filled. This is because the date of cylinder is near the dates when 6351 cylinders were being phased out 1987-1988. As such, just by the date most shops will automatically assume that the cylinder is made of 6351.

This will be of help as well:

The Catalina tank in question was hydro tested October 2008. I do not know if an eddy current test was performed. I know I did not pay extra for one. The tank passed inspection.

I also had a 2nd tank hydro tested, a Luxfer Aluminum 80, on October 2008. It's original hydro date is March 1983. It passed, and no mention of an eddy current test performed on this tank either. According to Luxfer, aluminum 80's made in 1983 are made out of AL6351.

Wormzer, on the Luxfer cylinder look next to the new hydro stamp is there "VE" stamped to the right of the date? If so this means they performed an eddy current test. If not they furbared and should do it.

If they did fubar it make a copy of this and give it to them:

Hazardous Materials: Aluminum Cylinders Manufactured of Aluminum Alloy 6351-T6 Used in SCUBA, SCBA, and Oxygen Services--Revised Requalification and Use Criteria | Federal Register Environmental Documents | USEPA

note Sec. 180.213 Requalification markings.

BTW the VE is needed for any shop should fill it. Of course they might have their own "rules".

Visual eddy inspection and the accompanying VE stamp is only required on 6351-T6 alloy tanks. Some shops and test facilties may do one on all AL tanks, and with the latest eddy current equipment you can test 6061-T6 tanks (older equipment can produce false positives on 6061-T6 tanks) but it is not required.

Since Catalina NEVER made a tank out of anything other than 6061-T6 aluminum no Catalina tank requires a visual plus inspection or a VE stamp.

If you do a search for "6351" here you should find several posts containing the cut off dates for Luxfer 6351-T6 production for various size tanks. Shops that have their stuff together have the list posted. Shops that you should avoid just refuse to fill any AL tank made prior to 1991.
