Hello group,

Yesterday I dove off the east side of Catalina Island and at about 80 feet I saw what looked like gigantic blades of Macrocystis. Not so much blades, more like ribbons, 15 feet long, a foot or so wide. It wasn't built like typical brown algae with a stipe and bladders and then a couple blades, I guess that's why it threw me off. It looked like all blade. . . .very cool indeed.

If anyone can help me ID this, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Laminaria?
That might be it, but it had the texture of Macrocystis. I guess I'll just have to go back and get a better description of it.

Bill will know, I think his PhD was on kelp.
