Hi Timothy
If you ever decide you want to do a shore dive in New York give me a shout. But wait until there is a dry spell. This rain is killing the vis. and the vis is shaky without the rain. But it is fun when you get good vis.

My personnal prefernce is to chose a dive operation that is not into running "fast boats" that want to get to the site, dive, get to the site and dive so they can get you back to the docks by noon.

A lot of operators advertise two tank dives in the a.m and two tank dives in the p.m. This is how they accomplish it.

Everytime I go down to Cozumel I use an independent and he picks us up at the docks at 10 a.m. We do the first dive, go to the beach for lunch then do the second dive. We normally get back to the pick up point around 4:30 pm. This makes for a very relaxed day and relaxing dives.

Check the operations out before you book!

Stayed at the Villablanca in Feb. really enjoyed myself--quiet and not so far from town that it costs you an arm and leg [4.00usd]. Check it out on the web .Have a Blast!!!!!!!!!

We've been diving in Coz for the past ten years. A great little dive shop is Blue Bubble If you want a very nice small place just a block inland from the dive dock you can't go wrong with Hotel Aguilar http://www.cozumel-hotels.net/aguilar/ Its a small Mom&Pop with a nice pool and courtyard with lots of tropical vegetation right across the street from Blue Bubble. Blue Bubble will store your gear for a nominal fee. The owner's wife is American and they keep an American bank if you want to take care of business State side before you go. At the hotel Marta will take good care of you. Haven't been there in a couple of years but it does'nt look like things have changed much. Hotel rates are in the range you're looing for and its much more convenient than the Days Inn. Blue Bubble can set up the hotel for you, although you'll get a little better rate if you book directly. PM me if you want more (we'll be in Roatan after tomorrow mid morning.:)

Came back yesterday. Stay away from Staff Scuba Divers in Cozumel. On first dive French DM didn't check two other divers equipment, was unable to secure their tanks, didn't do briefing and ignored that they never did backflip (both ladies dove Akaba, Maldives, Hawaii, etc.) First one lost mask upon entering and later lost her tank at 58ft. DM couldn't secure it under water. Second diver got lost (surfaced half a mile away) holding her tank. DM gave me ascent sign, so I did, stopping at 15ft according to my Suunto Vyper. He was at surface, banging his tank, showing me to terminate my safety stop. Well, I didn't. Got to the boat and explained that between him and Mr. Suunto I prefer Mr.Suunto. To other divers he said that he is not responsible for equipment' checks, only for dive guiding. Both ladies filed reports at the office.

Scary. It just goes to show that you are on your own. Practice it that way and you will never be sorry. When you rely on your buddy or the DM too much you can get hurt when you find yourself relying on your own skills.

Once I was diving in Coz. It was Devils throat.
I dove the night before with my wife so i had some nitro build up.
Anyway we were just about finished with the dive. The DM wanted to show the group somehthing else. My wife and I looked at our computers and said NO!! We went up. When the group came up they were all bragging how they did a deco dive. It seems the the DM put them all into deco. Maybe just over the edge but deco never the less. I have been diving for 16 years and never went into deco. And to let a DM put you there does not say a lot for the divers.

How many people go diving with a DM and never set there compass? How would you get back to the boat if you lost the DM?
How many people take there gear off and put it back on underwater? What would happen if you got caught on something and could not get free?
It pays to be as good as you can never let a DM run your dive listen to them and obey them BUT when it comes to your safety use your head. You and you alone are responsable for your own saftey. And in addtion your skills as a diver navigation as well as your other skills should be practiced at least once a year. I do mine at the beginning of the year. I take my gear off and put it back on while I am underwater. Set a compass course when diving with a DM.
It is nice to know where you are at all times and could save you from a long swim back to the boat.

Hi,

First of all, I want to thank everyone for their helpful comments however I am looking for something that is more reasonable - something comparable to the Hotel Lorena, et al -

I have booked the Days Inn at $33/night so maybe that is the best there is.

But if anyone has a jewel in the rough - would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Curtis:confused:

The Days Inn??? More Reasonable? I can't understand why anyone would want to spend the money to fly to and dive in Cozumel and not save a couple extra dollars to get a decent place to stay. If you're going to book a vacation, save your pennies for an extra week or two and stay somewhere you're going to enjoy. Cozumel is NOT the YMCA. Don't fly to the Caribbean and stay in Motel 6!

$33 a night may sound good, but look at it this way. I booked a package for 7 nights, and 5 days of diving at Brisas for about $100 a night. The cost of diving by itself was $63/day. On top of that it was an all-inclusive package. That means on dive days I paid $37/night for a room, food, and unlimited drinks at a pretty nice place. That's not bad.

I agree with Ebro...was in Cozumel in May, stayed at Brisas and dove with Dive Paradise. 7 nights - 5 dive days under $100 per day. Nice hotel and grounds. Might want to check out Bay Adventures (www.bayadventures.com) for dive packages. They are pretty reasonable.
