I've just recently switched from a ranger to a bp/w set up with double hp100's. I was wondering how tight others have there harness. When I was diving my ranger with a single tank I could do a barrel rool and the tank/bc would not move at all, With the bp/w if I rool to the side it moves on my back quite a bit. As it is set up now i have about 2 to 3 fingers space between my harness and drysuit, Is this amount of movement nornal?

You should be able to stick your hand in between the suit and harness as far as I know. I wear mine this way and it feels very comfortable.

Yes I do have a crotch strap

Another way that I have figured out to find the good harness tightness is to find the middle in between 2 following points.

1 your harness should be tight not slide off your shoulders when you move your arm on the back or be that loose that every time you try to find the D ring it`s somewhere in a new place again :)
2. It should not be too tight that it will make arching your back uncomfortable or restrict the movement of your arms when you try to reach for the valves.

I usually make the harness loose more than needed then just check how far the straps are and tighten them for the next dive.

I'm only a new BP&W diver, so others will likely have better information, but I found rather quickly that the tightness of the waist strap was more important than the shoulder straps for how secure the rig felt - as long as I make sure the waist strap is tight, I have no problem with the tank moving around at all, regardless of how loose the shoulder straps are (within reason of course). It only really took me one dive to find a setup that felt secure and comfortable, as opposed to over 40 with my last BCD (and still no success!).

I've dived the Ranger once before and found it very comfortable, but much prefer the simplicity of my BP&W - I'm sure you'll agree once you've dialled everything in to suit your body.

Hope that helps.

John

You can actually have the shoulder straps quite loose, if the crotch strap is adjusted properly and the waist strap is reasonably tight.

I could always get into my kit easy enough. It wasn't too hard to get out of, but had to be done just right. After a recent thread where TS&M mentioned that Bob Sherwood? had her loosen her shoulder straps a bit, I thought I'd give it a try too. Took mine out 2", best thing I ever did. Go's on easy, comes off easy & as long as the waist belt & crotch strap are set right, it's as solid as ever on my back.
