PerroneFord:
Uhhh, the Transpac has no backplate. I still can't fathom why anyone would need 34 pounds of lead.

Maybe I should look at the links before I comment. All I'm familiar with are diverite systems with backplates, so make my comment null.

I dive in Washington and wear a 7 mil full wetsuit. I'm a fatter-than-average guy and I only need 26 pounds. 20 on my belt and 6 in the backplate. You're just getting better, I know that I was overweighted for the longest time before I got my gear figured out. Unless you're about 5'9" and 230-ish pounds I doubt you need even 28 pounds. I'd arrange for someone from the dive shop or a DM to come out on a dive with you and just mess with your trim and weighting.

34 or 40 pounds? Holy crap...

In a 6.5mm two-piece I wear 12lbs on a weight belt and have 6 in the Halcyon SS backplate (with an Al80).

It takes me 28 pound of lead to be neutral at the surface wearing my drysuit, insulation, mask, fins, hood, and snorkel neutral. My large black diamond BC (which I just swapped out for a backplate) took another 5 to get neutral at the surface. I dive in southern California where the water temps range from 50 to 60.

I understand that 34# might be what you need right now with the gear that you are currently using. Going to a plate might help decrease it a bit. Perhaps a different cylinder would help, too. With a BP/wing, you would have numerous options for tweaking your weighting. Certainly, you could get your weight belt down to 10 pounds or less.
