They are almost identicle to the Suunto Vypers I think, operation wise and everything else... the main difference is the Vyper can be hooked up to your personal PC so you can download your dives. I think that might be the only difference.

The reason I mention all that, is becuase Suunto's website has a demo of how to use the Suunto Vyper on their website (but they don't have one for the Gekko... again, probably becuase they are nearly identicle).

So, I suggest downloading the interactive demo and going through it. http://www.suunto.com/suunto/main/a...T<>prd_id=845524442490167&bmUID=1161470976615 (It's a zip file on that page)

The operation is pretty simple. Jump in the water and it turns on automatically, swim down and it tells you your depth, the temperature, and how much bottom time you have left. You never have to touch a single button on it if you don't ever want too.

On the Vyper, when it's out of the water for about 5 minutes of inactivity (no more diving or button pressing), it switches back automatically to the day and time display (taking it out of dive mode), then after 2 hours of inactivity it turns itself off.

Suunto recommends turning it back on by pressing the SMART or MODE button before diving for the following reasons. Resetting it:

1) Causes all LCD segments to "turn on". If any aren't showing, the display element is bad and the unit should be repaired/replaced.

2) Shows the current condition of the battery (level of battery still available). 4 segments is good to dive. When it gets down to 1 segment, it wont work in dive mode for safety reasons.

They also recommend making sure, that all the altitude and personal settings are correct. For most conditions though, it should work right out of the box (set to AIR and lowest altitute) - as plot said, check the website for a demo ... you can also download an online manual there in pdf format (complete with formatting and pictures).

Have fun, and remember, be safe :)
