Please help me!! I'm going to South Africa and while I'm there I'm going to dive with great white sharks. It's not true diving, from what I've read we hold our breath and submerge ourselves. I snorkel in Hawaii a few times a year but otherwise the camera won't get much use. I don't want to miss any Jaws shots, but I also don't want to drop $300 on a camera. I should also mention that I leave in two weeks. I'd really appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

If you want to enjoy the dive and aren't willing to drop $300 on a camera (this is the barest minimum for an underwater camera and housing, with no other accessories) do yourself a favor and have the dive op take the pictures for you. They'll be better and you'll be happier, and you won't get munched by a great white while trying to focus for a pic.

I agree with Larry, many dive ops will take pics for you for a fee. The other alternative is to rent a camera. To get good shots of a great white you will need a wide angle lens and and oossibly a strobe. Those costs plus the cost of the camera places you way outside your $300 limit.

Regards,

Bill

I did the Shark dive in South Africa a few years ago. I did have my camera with me and got a couple of great keep sake photo's. But if i was to do it again i would want to take video. Although its snorkelling your standing in a cage where you can simply stand up straight and your head will be out of the water. We had 6 Great Whites (not all together) and the largest being 5.5 meters. If you already have an existing camera or cam corder i would see if you can get or hire a housing for it.

If you don't dive much and won't be using it, why buy? Check into renting a camera while you are there.
