Stupid yes, deserving of a death sentence no, effect on the ray probably little. They are plentiful. They are tough. They can tolerate being out of water for a while. So as crimes against nature go it is a pretty minor infraction. Worse part is that it might encourage somebody else to play with a sting ray with worse consequences to either person or ray.
