Hello, I can’t believe that my first post to the board is going to be this particular question but here goes, I have just recently started diving and along with this great new hobby has come a……nightmare of sorts….I am now snoring EVERY night. My wife has about had it with me. I seem to have a bit of cotton mouth and my sinuses are pretty dry but I don’t have any signs of an infection or anything. Has anyone else developed a snoring problem from diving?

I have been thinking of trying a humidifier but have not made the purchase yet.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

I did a search for snoring and seemed to find a bunch of funny stories about live aboard experiences but nothing really talking about what I have going on.....for anyone who's advice is to "use the search feature"

Thanks.

One word. CPAP. Which isn't a word, but an acronym. For something. Go to the sleep center and see if you suffer from sleep problems. If you are a heavy man, sleep apnea is very common. If you don't suffer from sleep apnea, there is a minor surgery (I think they cut the epiglottis) that can be performed. For the least expensive (and first) trick, get the anti-snore strips available at the drugstore (like the ones the NFL guys use) to hold your nose open while you sleep.

Good luck with your marriage.

Do you snore only on nights after you've been diving?

I find when I and my boyfriend are very tired from a day's diving, we both snore significantly more. You may simply just be more tired than you realize, and you're body is reacting.

Since you say you're cotton-mouthed, you may be dehydrated from diving. See if taking in more fluids helps.

Also, my boyfriend uses an over-the-counter spray that goes directly on the back of his tonsil area--there's tons of them out there. I think they're fairly inocuous---menthol and other similar ingredients. It's primary purpose is really just to shrink the mucuous membranes a bit, and also wetten/hydrate the area.
Good Luck!

It stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure if anyone is interested.

A sleep study is certainly going to provide a lot of answers, especially if you have developed sleep apnea, but I would look at what has changed recently before doing that.

Ask your wife what your snoring is like... if it's interrupted, as in it sounds like a rooting pig, make the doctor's office your next stop. If it's just normal loud snoring as you breath, it might be environmental. There are plenty of benign things it could be and some of the OTC remedies might solve it. But as always, you doctor will have the best advice.

I want to thank everyone for their advice. I think I had the remnants of a sinus infection that was dragging on. I have been sleeping well for the past week. My wife is back sleeping in the same room! whooo hoooo! I'm happy to be back in the water as well.
