We are a group of 4 looking for something new. We have been all over the caribbean but looking for something new maybe in the east. Fiji, Philippines, Fiji - something else??? Looking for warm water and land based. Boat dives in the AM with afternoon shore available a bonus.

What's a good first dip into these eastern waters?

Thanks for your thoughts!

It is not as distant or exotic as the Far East, but there is some very nice diving around Hawaii and it is quite different from the Caribbean; lot's of great topside activities and sights also and it is a beautiful place to visit.

I don't know anything about the Philippines, except that the State Department is warning American Citizens to stay away from some areas:

Default setting - Bali for four with shore diving at the Liberty - Puerto Gallera Phillipines - I noticed quite a few people shore diving - not sure which op offers shore dives though. Some shore diving around Kata/Karon from memory in Phuket.

Yep, do the South Pacific and Asia... a world of difference from the Caribbean. I'd recommend Palau... best diving I've done anywhere (although the Philippines were close)

Ditto with Palau! Just came back from there a few days ago. Besides all of those Palau’s signature hook-n-watch dive sites, you don’t want to miss the snapper spawning dive. It’s like being in big migration in Serengeti.

Just so you know, the Philippines people are the nicest I've met in my worldly travels bar none! I wouldn't hesitate going one iota....the southern islands, there are over 7000, like Mindanao, are known for rebel insurgents, but the north in and around Manila or Palau.....go for it without hesitation!

Allow me to educate you. I got a map, I do.

The geographical area they specify is nowhere near the commonly visited dive resorts or LOB routes.

Similar to the DOS's frantic warning you shared in regards to mainland Honduras, but posting It on the Geographically isolated Roatan site. I got a map of that, too.

Remain calm, even Dandy Don has relaxed, consider the Philippines, it's fabulous, inexpensive and feels safe to me. But, I do live near Chiraq.

I like Hotel Atlantis dive op on Sabang Beach. No Gorillas, just monkeys.

Try not to be so condescending, it's really not necessary. I never said that the Philippine travel warnings pertained to the popular vacation areas - but it is still useful information to have when you are planning a trip to an unknown country. If you are well-informed you can more easily evaluate the options and make good decisions. That's my opinion, and like you I am entitled to have an opinion and to share it with others, and they (and you) are free to consider or disregard it as desired.

And the link for the article I posted about Roatan was to let folks know that CAL was allowing travelers to change their flight plans without penalty, due to the curfews imposed in Honduras due to political unrest, but I specifically stated that the Bay Islands did not fall under the curfew.

Allow me to educate you - you need to take your own advice and try to relax and not jump on people that you disagree with.

Bali for some land excursions, maybe some wreck diving, muck diving, or sunfish searching. Then fly east to Komodo and dive it by dayboats. :) liveaboard is possible but dayboats fill your wishlist. Amazing diving in indonesia.

I dive Philippines for the first time in April and will compare to my beloved Indo.....

There is a similar warning for Canadians from our government. Risk Level: PHILIPPINES - Exercise a high degree of caution
