Hi--

I hope there's someone out there that can help me . . . I'm a realitvely new diver (certified in 2003) and have gotten sea sick on every trip that has involved a boat. I've tried dramamine, the natural ginger tablets, the prescription patch behind the ear--the patch takes the edge off, but I still get nautious. A friend told me there is a new prescription drug out that works really well. Does anyone know the name of it?

Thanks!

What's worked for me is Bonine.

I take one before I go to bed the night before a trip, then another about two hours before I get on the boat. If I don't take the one the night before I get seasick.

I've heard Scopace works wonders too.

I use Bonamin or Gravol <same stuff different names> I take one the day of the boat trip an hour or two before heading out on the boat, and I take en extra one with me if I am going to be on the boat for more then 4hrs. I also don't eat a big breakfast or drink coffee before going on the boat.

How early did you put the patch on? They don't work if they aren't on for 4+ hours before the motion starts.... I get really bad motion sickness (even had to leave the Blair Witch movie because I was getting nausious with the camera moving)
The patch has totally worked for me.

Bonine and Dramamine etc. have not.

Have a look in the Diving Medicine forum, there may be more info there.

I used to get sea sick every time I got on a boat also. It got to the point that I considered quiting diving. Then someone told me about a med called Meclizine. You have to buy it from the Pharmacy but it does not require a prescription. My last bottle cost me $8.00 for 100 tablets. I take one the night before I get on the boat, and another one the morning I get on the boat and then every morning after that. If it is going to be really rough I take one at night and one in the morning. I also do not eat greasy breakfast in the morning. The meclizine works really well for me. I have not been sea sick since I started taking it.

You should check with your doctor before taking it in case you are alergic to it. Also do not start taking a new med on a dive trip, try it before you go on your trip so that you know how it affects you. You do not want to take a Med that makes you really drowsey. Hope this works as well for you as it has for me.

Safe Diving,

John

Good call Don, thanks. I moved it from the Intro forum to the Basic Scuba Discussions forum.

Drugs are great (that didn't come out right) but remember the basics, be hydrated, rested, keep the horizon in sight try for the middle of the boat and avoid exhaust fumes.
