Yes I too was very disheartened at the apparent ignorance, although I suspect some are just being deliberately antagonistic...but on a brighter note there are many on this thread who share the same sentiment and are trying to do something. As I have previously said just because something "seems" impossible it is no reason to sit back and do nothing, sure as eggs apathy will get you no where, every journey starts with one step. I for one will never give up trying.

I hope you're right. I'm very passionate about the issues surrounding sharks - finning and misconceptions that they are human killing machines. In fact, the reason I took up scuba diving is to dive with sharks one day. The film "Sharkwater" shed light on a world and issues I didn't even know about...

You're right "there is no reason to sit back and do nothing"... if everyone in this world had that attitude, nothing would get done.

I've shown this movie to all my friends and like many in the world they had no real concept of the scale of slaughter. I've only ever seen two sharks, save an aquarium shark dive, in my diving life and like you its one of the main reasons I got into diving in the first place. Absolutely amazing creatures.

Fantastic Post

Proof that we CAN make a difference.

Actually locally (Ontario, Canada)... Brantford ON, Pickering, ON and a few others (I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Toronto as well) have banned the sale of any shark products in stores and resturants. Which is a great step towards making change. If anything else, maybe it will force the individuals who eat shark fin soup locally to look into why it's no longer allowed... perhaps making them realize eating shark fin soup, and the finning trade is decimating the shark populations around the world!

I hope Scarborough is included!!
Pity it has long way to go in HK.

I hope Scarbrough follows suit! I believe that the more the general public becomes aware of these issues, the more things will change.

If everyone does their best to spread the word... it will speed up the process :D

This is a film that has yet to go into general distribution. If you can find it near you, see it. For the rest of us, right now, the two video trailers should make your hair stand on end. Play them to the end; expand them to fill your screen and enjoy ...

Hey Blackvans, don't tell me not much can be done mate!

I'm on expedition in Borneo, the Philippines and Indonesia researching the shark fishing and dynamite (blast fishing) issues - and they are vast problems! I have helped many local adults and kids understand that what they have is vital to their well-being through talking and educating - I have also left a few blast fishermen with a real long swim back home.

In the coral triangle around 60% of the worlds population get around 70% of their daily protein requirement from the sea - its whole eco system is close to collapse, what do you think will happen when it does. I fund this myself by working my ass off, and it costs plenty - so please don't tell me "that there's not much can be done".

By the Whaling Pirates you refer to in your email above, I believe you mean Paul Watson and the Sea Shepard team Sea Shepherd . You are very much mistaken if you think their efforts have been in vain, as they have just about stopped the Japanese waling fleet completely - the Japs have declared they wont send a fleet to Antarctica this year as it inst economically viable - because of the constant harassment their hunting ships are under from the Sea Shepard.

I believe you are correct in saying that some one will always break the law regardless, but look at other endangered species brought back from the edge because the "majority" said no more. I see many have visited this blog - hope you have all taken the time to fill out the petition in the lead thread.

Cheers Black Van, look up Sea Shepard you may even get off your ass some time and make a difference yourself, I hope so mate. Keep the bubbles coming.

PS; for Garrobo; Dude your posts above are the language of the OT's (oxygen thief's)! Get a life and earn your air.
