No, you're only allowed to catch sharks that have already been finned. That should be easy, there are millions and millions of them.

California bans trade or posession of fins, but does not ban catching of sharks, except for the fins. So the people hunting sharks has to ditch the fins before bringing it back on shore?

Cheeky...

Lets walk through this one slowly...

California law allows the legal catching of sharks if the entire shark is used - stored intact in a hold in the ship. The use of these fins is allowed, as well as the entire shark.

Boats that only take shark fins come back with holds with only shark fins, not intact sharks.
The use of these fins is prohibited.

The question is once on shore, how to separate those fins that were taken illegally vs, those that were taken legally.
A tough problem, probably needs more enforcement power.

I know where this is leading...

California allows the commercial trade of every part of the shark, from making shark skinned suits to shark taxidermy, except for the fins. So someone wanting a stuff shark has to have one without the fins.

Wading in again to this debate (sorry thread....).

Two points;
firstly reflecting on posts back a few pages raging on about "direct action vrs armchair action". I am taking direct action almost everyday, through educating locals here in Malaysian Borneo, and sometimes intervention...eh, like "disappearing" illegal fishing equipment or live stock (technically a grey area), and occasional direct action through confrontation..........especially when we get fish bombs thrown at us or our scientific dive support boats....three-nil (3-0) so far. However I thank each and every person who does no more than occasionally flicks a pen or keyboard and signs a petition......their input is also very worthwhile, it shows they are at least aware of the issues.......more than a lot of other folk.

2nd point; more relevant to the current posts above.....a sad fact is politicians are often more interested in themselves than the issues they vote fore/against; therefore they often leave loopholes so both-sides seem to get a win. Some of these loopholes are so obvious it make a joke of the whole system while wasting your tax paying dollars.

Invite your parliamentary member/representative to go for a dive sometime and show them first hand how important these environmental issues are. Yeah right, good luck! Keep fighting, that's all we can do.

PS; Sharks being a top predator often have a large residual mass of toxins and in-particular heavy metals like mercury....yum! this is stored in their organs and cartilage...i.e fins! eat up idiots.

Cheers All.

HUGE WIN!

The city of Toronto, ON Canada (including Brantford, and also Mississauga) are completely "FIN FREE". It is now illegal to own, consume or cook shark. This was a big win towards saving sharks worldwide, and expectations are that the rest of our country is to following. Cities like Vancouver, Calgary, etc have all taken notice, and they're next to bring this to the table. Our federal government is next...

News & Events

Big things are happening, and it's all due to the efforts of everyone trying to make change. (whether it's from behind a keyboard, or someone battling on the front lines). Keep up your efforts everyone, without them, none of this would have happened!

Cheers,
Colin

Cheers All.

No apologies necessary - weigh in as much as you can.I don't know if you've already done this, and you probably have enough to worry about out there in the hinterlands(seas?) but have you started a blog? I think it would be so interesting to see what's going on out there .
Just stay safe - it sounds like some of the locals aren't exactly happy about your work...

cheers

Hey all, a member (? sorry didn't get who) recently posted asking for info on Mercury content in shark fins - to start attacking from a medical view point. Just Google it there's plenty of info. It would be great if somebody could contact the universities that specialise in marine studies, as Im sure it would make a great PHD study for someone if it hasn't already.

The FDA must have some info - look them up and drag it out public, they are really quite easy to deal with for a large government body.

Ive got my hands full, here in Borneo tackling the local issues regarding blast fishing and target fishing sharks so glad to see others are taking the fight forward. Let me know how you go.

P.S Quick Colin - thanks for the heads-up re parts of Canada - what you need to do now is pose as a health inspector and gate crash a few Asian weddings - shark fin soup is always the first dish served so should be easy to spot....lol

Good luck with Vancouver and its huge Chinese population. J boycotts restaurants that serve shark fin, so we couldn't eat any Chinese food when we were in Vancouver in May.
