So I have been interested in bug hunting Catalina island. My problem is that I have no idea where to start hunting. Can anyone direct me to some good spots to try? I am not looking to plunder anyone's honey holes. I am just looking for a decent area to hunt before we motor across to Catalina. I would hate to burn the gas to just blindly hit a spot we throw a coin at. This has been my first season bug hunting and for the most part I have been pleaged with mini's and no shows. The bug on my avatar pic was an awesome fluke.

I would appreciate it if anyone can chime in.
Thanks

Must admit I haven't taken any bugs since 1975. One area that divers like to hit, at least early in the season, is Hen Rock near Long Point. I've wondered about Lonng Point itself since there are lots of nooks and crannies there, but it is a steep drop off so maybe a bit much for the bugs to come out and feed on the bottom at night. Not sure about the two quarries... plenty of hiding places in the rocks.

You can go out with charters, there are many to choose from or you can catch some on the mainland that go over for a day or a few days. There are usually a lot of divers in the boats that catch lobsters and would be willing to help you out and give you some good information. Good luck!!!

Hi there Muggsy!

It is often a good idea for a diver from the mainland to catch one of the boats from there on a day trip to Catalina. Most dive boats know the places to hunt, and the cost of a boat is generally not much more (if any) than the RT boat fare, food, air fills, etc., on the island. Many of them allow you to sleep on board the night before.
