Hi there,

I just registered for this board, it looks like lots of good info. My husband and I just took our open water class and are heading to Puerto Vallarta for our open water dives. I have a question that I hope someone can help with.

We have been checking dive shops in PV (never been there) and had about decided on Pacific Scuba, however, they do charge more than some other places. We have been communicating with them by email and I asked if the price was negotiable. I did not think this was out of line.

Well, the email I received back sounded quite PO'd that I would ask such a thing. Was I out of line????? And now I am almost scard to go with them, I don't want them holding something against me.

Needless to say, although I am very excited, I am also a bit nervous about our first open water dives. Yikes. :)
Also... any one have experience in PV at the end of January? Will we be freezing and will our kids be warm enough to play in the water?

Thanks for all the help.... I enjoy reading the posts.

And welcome to SB. :wavey: Put us in your "Favorites" and check in often...

Yeah, you were maybe a little out of line, but don't worry about it. You're new to Scuba, and he knows it. If you decide to go with them, maybe a small apology, like maybe: "Sorry if I seemed too cheap, when I asked if you'd take less. Looking forward to training with you." That should oil the waters okay. Maybe some instructors can give you more insight on this, but then - you didn't say what they wanted for the "Referral."

Sometimes I think natives in other countries see us all as rich Americans, who can afford to pay and tip more, after we've spent money to vacataion where they live - often in poverty. They don't understand our perspectives, and that we may have over extended ourselves to be there. On the other hand, compared to most of the world, we really are rich Americans who can afford to spend and tips more. I try to be generous when I travel, as I feel life has been very kind to me, while the staff I'm working with may life in a shack I'd use for a chicken coop in Texas, etc. Other times, I feel that the natives may be trying to abuse me; that'll vary, of course.

Can't help you at all on PV. Have you done a Search on the Mexico forum? You might try that, and if you don't find what you want, ask again there.

Hi Amy

I'm new to the boards too.

As far as asking if something is negotiable, I do not think you should have to apologize for asking. It would be one thing if you badgered them about the price, but simply asking is not a crime.

Never been to PV - let us know how the diving is.

Congrats! ( For joining (: ) There is alot of good information on here, I must confess this myself, everbody is usually inviting and nice and open for questions on just about everything on Scuba Diving, so I hope you get the information that you need!
