Well as my name implies I am curious and indeed a monkey. I'm sort of new to diving, got certified many moons ago but just recently got wet again and have been in love ever since. If any one has any ideas on reducing my air consumption, short of reading the thread involving that (because I have) feel free to let me know. Um... that's about all. Lets see who responds:popcorn:

Well Monkey cutting air consumption is a quest for many divers. Start with being weighted right, to many divers are over weighted and then struggling to achieve neutral buoyancy. When you can change the amount of gas in your lungs and move 15 to 20 feet are even more in the water column you'll be at peak.

When you use the inflator don't chase yourself. Use little "bumps" then stop to the change reacts. It is not instant so lots of divers change to much "volume" before they realize it and they look like a yo-yo.

Then control your breathing learn how to inhale and exhale while holding a volume of air in your lungs and how to change it by how much buoyancy you need are don't need. Never skip breathe but you'll come to a point when you inhale you'll pause then exhale getting a better gas exchange and not feeling you have to take a breath again real fast for exchaging more O2.

These are a few steps you can work on ... besides your fin efficiency and kick style.
 
Thanks for the warm welcome all... as far as my weighting goes I think that I have hit my optimal weight. A friend of mine told me that if you float at eye level on the surface w/o air you have done it. I've gotten there and i have seen an improvement. But the thing that I'm wanting - maybe my own personal holy grail is to maximize my bottom time. take my 45 min dive into the 60 min and beyond.

Maybe it'll help if I told you my setup...
Zeagle Stilleto, Legend Reg, ABS Octo, and Quattro fins. Oh and alum 80s w/ 32%

Hi Monkey,

Maximizing bottom time depends on several issues. As already mentioned, get your weighting right (it may change depending on where you dive, what exposure protection you use, your personal health etc), and learning to relax and breathing continuously but slowly and efficiently. But it also gets better when you get fitter from a cardiovascular perspective - get into shape and you'll see a bit of improvement on your bottom time also. Slowing down your movements also works wonders - there's no race so take it easy (less work translates into less oxygen needed from the air/nitrox you're breathing from your tank).

The big thing however is being relaxed in the environment you dive in. Dive more; dive more frequently; stay warm; and relax. That's a good place to start with. :coffee:
