Hi to all,
I've been certified since `88 but only dove for the Fire Dept while in operations. So in addition to regular responses, we were also dispatched on Dive calls. During that time I seldom dove for relaxation since I equated diving with working. Blackwater diving in canals at 2 in the morning was routine. Anyways as time passed after I gave up the FD dive team, diving became fun again. My kids were certified when they turned 15 and we have dove together several times. I dont consider myself an expert and look forward to this community to exchange ideas and information.

It would seem that you are an expert. What sort of training/certification did you do to dive in those dismal canals?

Our training and certification was Dept based "Search and Rescue" with an emphasis on rapid location of victim and bringing them to surface. Most canals are 15 ft, some are 40. Very similar to firefighting techniques in the fact that we dress out on the way to the call and work in teams. The non diver is the line tender. Stopped diving for the Dept in 2002 and even now the BC used is still a horse collar with 63CF tank.
However, little emphasis on trim, advanced propulsion kicks, and the finer points of diving. It was all based for a quick search and snatch.

So no, Im not an expert when it comes to regular leisure diving and making my air last forever ... but working on it :)
