Hi there everyone. I just got my NAUI c-card and I'm excited to start diving in Monterey.

Has anyone here read the Lonely Planet's guide to Diving and Snorkeling the Montery Peninsula and Northern California? Would it be a good investment for me to pick up?

Also, I'll be lurking the forums looking for reviews on good inexpensive equipment for a 6'5" 250 lber.

I'm going to be looking to buy a BC first, so if you have any suggestions I'd appreciate the help. I'm very interested in weight integrated BCs, as in my certification dives at Monterey I had to wear 44 lbs on a weight belt to offset the bouyancy of my wetsuit and myself. I need to get some of that weight off my hips.

Thanks!

Quite a few of us bay area folks here, many of whom are reasonably familiar with Monterey diving.

I haven't read the book....sorry!

Good to have you! The Lonely Planet is a pretty good investment; it's got some good detailed descriptions of dive sites around here including advice on entry, conditions and that sort of thing. Be advised that the sites listed are probably about 60%Boat and 40%Shore accessible so if you're looking for something describing specifically shore diving sites it might not be the right book for you. IMHO no dive book is a waste of money; my cats seem to like them more than the carpet.
Good luck and good diving.

A few suggestions I do like to offer every new member. First, it's good to keep your Profile with location and Dive Info with number of dives up to date so other members can address any questions appropriately; edit these as possibly needed from your UserCP above or the Quick Links above.

And don't be shy about posting. Click Forums above, tour the long list of choices, and jump in anywhere you're qualified. PM me with any questions, and I'll try to find a pretty good answer.
