Hi, im new to scuba, but really enjoy it. In the short time between taking classes and my actual certification I have met some really cool people. Scubaboard is a great place to get info about stuff and interact, at least digitally, with other scuba divers. My wife/buddy are going to Bonaire for our honeymoon (05/10/2004) and are quite excited about the trip. We have heard nothing but good reviews of the Bonaire diving scene. Is there a thread concerning boat ettiquette? We want to have a good time and not make anyone angry while we are still newbies. Thanks :-)

Hey from another Cincinnatian! Boat etiquette...hmm yes...have fun, smile alot, and don't step on anyone. If you run into a grump, move on to someone else. It's a vacation, everybody should be chilled out!

Hi Jeffro.

Welcome to Scubaboard and the world of SCUBA. Congrats on the impending nuptuals. I don't know if there is an existing thread on boat etiquette but there is a search function at the top of the page so you could check.

Also, check out the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew in the clubs forum to hook up with local divers.

See you in a quarry some time.

Boat etiquette? Uh... stay away from Dandy Don?

whatup w/Dandy Don?

Nothing I hope! I was just picking on him. It seemed funnier last night.
Sorry Don.

It's great that you're diving! I envy the spouse/buddy part as my wife doesn't dive (yet?). Since you're in Cincinnati, you might want to drop by the Gavia Scuba Club that meets the 3rd Thursday in Sharonville (details on their web site). The June meeting is next week on the 17th.

I'm not sure if I should ask how your honeymoon trip was or just say "Congratulations" on the wedding. What is the 05/10/2004 date for? Is that 10-May or 5-Oct?

Welcome to ScubaBoard in any case. There's various threads about boat ettiquette particularly with regard to tipping customs in various parts of the world. Just remember to avoid searching for short words -- i.e., look for "tipping" rather than "tip" or "tips".

Hey, I haven't bit anybody in a long time! :jump:

{Scubajoe was one of the nice folks who welcomed me when I joined almost a year ago. Enjoyed those welcomes a lot, so much that I now try to greet every new member. They even gave me a special title, but - I don't get the secret handshake.}

Nah, I started a thread about appropriate boat etiquette for smoking. :lightingz Boy, did that nearly come to blows. Went on for a few hundred posts.

But seriously: #1 Boat Rule is don't board without permission. Beyond that, the crew should give you directions, but it would help if you'd inform them at boarding time that you are new to boat charters and want to act right. Divers are generally pretty helpful and polite to each other, so there's not much risk there.

I guess boat rule #2 would be weights never go on a bench, always on the deck. Be sure your tank is always bunged if your hand is not on it. The rinse bucket is for dipping water into your mask, then throwing the rinse overboard, not into the bucket. Never put anything but masks in the mask bucket, nor anything but cameras in the camera bucket, except maybe for comptuers - ask first.

Some boats have Heads (privies) but still encourage pissing for distance off of the stern. I always get up early, do my smokes and coffee, and try to get my downloads done well before boarding in the morning. I'm the only one I know, but I usually wear a life preserver on a moving boat; no shame here. :fork:

I strongly suggest that every diver carry a safety sausage and storm whistle on every dive, and 4 belt clips in your bag even if you don't plan on using a web belt - $30.

Hope this helps some...

thanks guys, every post helps! I just finished my cert dives at blue springs in Waldron Indiana. Cold Cold Cold. Needless to say i don't care much for quarry diving yet. At least it will be an incentive to take a drysuit class :-). I got a bcd as a wedding present from my family, its an aqualung patriot. are there any "necessary" bc accessories i should bring w/me to Bonaire next month?

I was just at Blue Springs a few weeks ago. 50F in my 5/3 wetsuit, 3mm gloves, and 6.5mm hood. Cold after 36min 1st dive, but still went back in for the 2nd! My buddy had his drysuit however. It did make me think about getting a thick FJ/J, but I wanted to know what the full temperature range that I could dive with my wetsuit. My current "range" spans 50F (short dives :loki3: ) to 81F.

Which shop did you do your OW through?
