I'm an ER doc in the Seattle area who has recently, after about 17 years of my husband "suggesting" it, gotten certified. I swore I was NEVER getting in Puget Sound, not in any kind of diving suit, and now I'm doing it voluntarily!

A friend suggested this board, and suggested I post the url from the journal I've been keeping of my diving experiences. She seems to think that people would enjoy reading it: http://www.tsandm.com/lynneblog/id8.htm

I've read a couple of articles and a few threads already (particularly the one on tips for newbies, which had some thought-provoking posts) and I'm sure this will be a good resource to continue exploring.

Hi and welcome to scubaboard, it is a great resource. As another cool water diver I can understand why you hesitated to start diving but once into it, it gets better and better. Thanks for the journal link.

Welcome to the board. It's an interesting place, and hope you find it both enjoyable as well as a valuable resource.

Puget Sound has lots to offer, and there is also some outstanding diving in the San Juans and points north. Here is an option, for example, that you might find intriguing:

Best to you with your PNW diving.

Dive safe,

Doc

That is a great detailed account of your certification! I really enjoyed reading it and portions gave me a good chuckle. Especially the giant stride because I was the same way in class. I could do the backward roll with no problem, but facing out and stepping off some perfectly sound cement at the pool just didn’t feel right. As with most things in diving, the more you practice the more comfortable you are with the skill. Oh, and from now on your dives will feel less like one hour when it was seventeen minutes, and more like seventeen minutes when it was one hour.

Have fun diving in Maui!

Welcome to the board and to diving.

Don’t forget to visit the Dive Medicine and DocDeco under Marine Science and Physiology forums here. Sort of a nice convergence of your sport and profession in one place. Given Seattle WA location you do have the potential to see a patient or two who just might have a diving related injury or illness and at least there will be a doctor there who knows what the words “Bent” or DCI mean. It was somewhat disconcerting when I was sent to a local hospital with the Bends by DAN and the emergency room said “bends, what’s that?”. The hyperbaric medicine folks there were top notch; the emergency room on the other hand completely mishandled my case and kept me there for 4 hours with out starting any treatment (you had to go through the emergency room to get to the hyperbaric chamber, hospital rules”. All because no one in the emergency room was familiar with diving or dive medicine.

Enjoy exploring out various forums, and PM me if you get lost.
