Hi William,

Cool. You mean Whiteland that is 20 min south of INDY. You live in nearby Indy, don't you? It will be nice for us to dive with the experienced diver.

Hope to see you soon.

Hoosier

Yep, 20 Min South of Indy. Ann Manders and John Pravitas were my Instructors. I used to belong to Divers Suppy when it was located downtown Indpls. Did my OW at Hidden Paridise. My last dive was a wreck/Arch dive in Lake michigan near Chicago. Where you at in IN ?

wilbkr1:
Hello,

I live in Indiana and have not dove since 1990 and look forward to getting back into it again. I completed my Dive Master course and helped a frind teach courses for the YMCA. Been Married for 17 years and hitting mid life. I'd like to get back to what I was doing and see what happen from there. I bought a set of fins today from a member of this community. He (Corigan) recommend scubaboard. Look forward to getting to know the community.
Hi wilbkr1, I live in Fishers and just got certified. Have only done one trip since then, but am heading to Cozumel with Indy MPH the first week of August. Where in Indiana are you?

DandyDon:
Good to hear you're getting back wet. PM me if I can help you find your way around here....

Dandy Don, aren't you the one looking into a singles trip the week after Christmas? Where in Indiana are you located? If I can get away with it, without making my hubby too mad, i'd love to do a Keys trip right after Christmas. Hopefully, I qualify as a single, since my husband doesn't dive or go on trips!

I got certified in Cabo San Lucas! I was determined to avoid the quarries at all costs! Since then, I have done a couple of dives in Miami. Hope Coz has recovered from the hurricane by the time we get there...and that no more 'canes go that way while we're there!

I live in Seattle and just returned from a trip to Indiana. While I was there I did my first quarry dive at France Park. I will have to say it is not the Puget Sound or an ocean, but I found it to be a fun dive experience. The paddlefish were interesting and the catfish were fun to chase.
If I lived in Indiana I would dive all the quarries I could get wet in. So I am a bit confused as to why you are determined to avoid them at all costs?

I am a reptile--completely cold-blooded. I hate to be cold, and the quarries are cold! That said, maybe I will give it a try here one of these days. It would probably be worth it just to be diving!

When I dove France Park on July 16. The water temp was 80 - 76. I usually dive Puget Sound so I am use to water temps that run 50 - 55. I dove a wet suit something I have not done in years. ( I dive dry at home) and except for those few times when I hit a "cold" spot. I was very comfortable with the water temps.

I think you should try a quarry just once. I am glad that I did.

Who set up the quarry trip with you? I guess 76-80 doesn't sound too bad. I dove Miami in April and forgot my wet suit--it was 72 and I was pretty darn cold, but I survived! What is there to see in a quarry? I guess I always think of it as muddy and murky, with a bunch of refrigerators and cars sunk in them!

I think you had better stick to your ordinary plan, a fancy ocean sightsee-diving. As you said, there is nothing to see in Indiana quarries. It is mostly muddy and murky with a bunch of cars, trucks, and buses. Many of them have been already rotten and bad shaped. Well, what do you expect in Indiana?

However, there is something you have to know. There are many hoosier divers who just want to be wet and practice their skills at any places where the water is available. There are also many mid-west divers who have a willingness to travel for six hours to be wet at the murky indiana quarry. I would like to call them a real dive mania.

I have had a chance to dive with a board member from GA at one of Indiana quarries. I tried to show every object as much as possible within two dives. But, VIZ wasn’t good due to the previous rains so that I felt sorry to him because he must expect better environment. But, his reply made me to think our Indiana diving environment more positive. He said, “Many cave divers even enjoy diving in 1~2ft VIZ condition. Indiana quarry is much better than that.” Yes, if you compare our local diving environment with other well known dive resorts, Bonaire, Key Largo, or Cozumel, I guarantee that you are never satisfied with anywhere in Mid-West.

It is natural that everyone wants to dive in a warm and good resort places. However, please be aware that there are many mid-west divers who can't make it due to budget, schedule, or any toher conflicts. At the same time, some members are waiting for every weekend and appreciating for the murky quarry diving.

In conclusion, I am not sure how many countries you have traveled so far. Based on my experience, even though you travel to any poverty countries, such as Vietnam or Mongo, there are something you can see and learn from them. In the same context, there is something to see and enjoy in a murky Indiana quarries depending on your viewpoint.
