Hi there everyone - I just signed up at the invitation of another member and wanted to say hello. I am not a certified diver but I live on the Gulf of Mexico and love to snorkel. I have always wanted to learn to scuba dive and maybe I'll get inspired here to get with the program. It seems crazy to live near so much water and not "dive in" more.

Anyway, my day job is director of the Clean Water Network of Florida and we work hard to protect water quality from pollution. I think one of your staff has posted a newspaper article about our latest report which came out yesterday in papers, tv and radio across the state of Florida. It is called: Gulf of Mexico - Florida's toilet

I would love to hear from divers with stories/experiences about pollution problems they have encountered.

Welcome to Scuba Board. If you love to snorkel you should get certified. You're comfortable in the water and that is half the battle. You will get inspired from this site, it's full of dive addicts.

I've never been to the Gulf of Mexico so cannot offer any stories/experiencs about pollution problems I've encountered there. There are alot of members from Florida on this board so you should have no problems getting feedback from them.
 
Welcome to the 'Board, Linda! Do you just deal with clean water in the gulf or do you have anything to do with the rivers and springs in the panhandle. If you do, I have some stories about the springs that might interest you. If you want to try scuba diving without making a huge commitment, let me know. I offer free Discover Scuba experiences. You might even get me to come check out your area of the gulf and do it right there in your back yard.
 
Welcome to the board. I'll be moving down to that area this year and would love to help in any way I can. Definately learn to dive. It's a very awsome experience, next to repelling, skydiving, chasing sharks and eating taco's. (I make killer taco's).

Hi everyone - wow! thanks for all the warm welcomes. I feel very welcome and I really look forward to getting certified and learning to dive - a dream I have postponed for far too long.

I'm also looking forward to reading different forums and getting more familiar with this fantastic website. It is so well done. I'm really impressed so far.

To answer Rob's question, my organization, Clean Water Network of Florida deals with springs, creeks, rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters, wetlands, etc. If it has to do with water in Florida then we are interested. My personal interest is first and foremost the panhandle because that's where I live, but organizationally we address the entire state. So I am definitely interested in pollution information statewide, but particularly in the panhandle.

You are welcome to come here too anytime (that I'm over here, as my office is in Tallahassee). I drive across the Chipola twice a week, almost every week, so I'm over that way a lot. Thank you!
