Living here in the midwest is torture for me, as it would be (I suppose) for any diver. There are a few flooded rock quarries to play in, but hardly worth the effort, unless you would consider a '62 Pontiac on the bottom of a lake, a wreck dive. The Mississippi River is obviously out of the question. The visibility sucks, and I'm not too sure I'd want to see whatever's down there anyway.

Ahh it's not all that bad. We do have the mine, cold but great vis and some really good cave systems. The quarries are what you make of them. Yea it's not the Carribean but at least you get to get wet.

I guess the biggest reason I'm here is to research my next dive vacation, and to get back into it. Plus the fact that this is, without a doubt, the largest and most diverse crowd of people I've ever seen on a message board. I'm bound to learn a lot!

That we are. Welcome to the board, there is tons to be learned here.

Howdy James! That picture of you in your profile, looks exactly like the quarry I was talking about! Is it the one with the car at the bottom? I only did it one time. Made the mistake of thinking I wouldn't need a hood. When I went through the thermocline, it felt like my head was splitting in two.
I would like to dive the mines sometime, but when I'm home, something else always manages to put diving lower on my priority list. (I know, sacriledge and heresy!)
How much is a two tanker at the mines anyway? I'm just OW1, so the cavin' part is out for now.

That's Quail Run quarry in Rolla. No car, but a couple of boats, etc. It's a pretty small quarry, but it's close to St Louis. I dive it comfortably in a 3mm FS in the summer or use a 5mm in spring/fall. As long as you stay out of the "well" that feeds it the temp is not to bad.

The mine is way over priced $65/tank 2 tank minimum. But if you're in the area you should definatly do it once. 56 deg so you'll need a 7mm and hood, but it's crystal clear.
