I don't get to dive for free very often, seems like everyone wants to charge me to participate!! (just kidding).
Anyway, as negatively buoyant as I am, it is something I should do, thing is how would I get back up after I dropped like a stone to some god awful depth?

Hey Robin, welcome to the board, I have a couple of friends here on Maui that freedive weekly, mostly looking for tako, and they confine their dives to 65ft or less. I enjoy it, but I'm limited to 40ft max, and would much rather be down for 75min. on SCUBA anyway.
If you can let us know the type of freediving you are thinking of (depth records, spearfishing, snorkeling in the top 20ft, etc..) I'm sure there are folks we can put you in touch with.
