I am very new to scuba, just got certified in the fall and am going to Cozumel in a month. I'm very nervous! Super excited, but nervous as its my first time in the ocean. What should I take for a wetsuit? I just bought all my own gear but have yet to test it out in the pool, we're going to do that next weekend. I guess I'm just very new, live in Saskatchewan so not near the ocean very often and could just use some people to talk to that have experience. Again, very excited but a little nervous. :). We're also going to go fishing while we're there, so much fun!

thanks everyone! Happy diving!

Hi,

I was and still am sometimes a little nervous about my first ocean dives of a trip. For Coz a 3mm wetsuit should be just fine.
There is a beach park on cozumel island a little bit south. I forget the naem of the park but a lot of the hotels do trips there. You can rent tanks etc right there and go out with a guide for a dive from the beach. I did this. It's super easy because its a nice long sandy bottom to a depth of around 30ft. There are some corals and statues underwater. I also saw some large angle fish, eels, octopus and large tarpin. I would recommend it as a place for your first dives because it is real easy and you don't have to deal with the stress of a boat. Also you can use this as an opportunity to make sure your weighting is correct for your wetsuit.

Then head off on the boats!

Hello, My wife and I go to Cozumel every year and she wears a 3mm full wetsuit. If you are skinny you might want to wear a 5mm or you can put on a neoprene dive hood. 3mm, thats what my wife and a few other cold blooded divers do. Make sure you have dive booties as your feet get rubbed raw in your fins otherwise. There are a few good places to buy gear there at about the same price as the mainland if you need to. If you are nervous I recomend you hire a private divemaster for your first dive or two just to get you comfortable, request one ahead of time so they can plan for you, I used to do it for my wife and it was great for her confidence. Also the name of the park the other poster mentioned is Chankanab, a couple km south of town. Be safe and don't be shy about asking for help, most dive operators are very good down there, stay close to your buddy! a
