Well allegedly the yogi can do it as can kateda masters. But in reality I think you want to reduce your air consumption. My 2c...work out and do cardio and weights to allow you to more efficiently use the air you do breath. While diving, breath slowly and consciously, if you have air integrated computer look at your bottom time and keep a track of how that changes in your head and try and breath slower accordingly.
 
Yes. Exercise regularly.


Also, don't drink coffee or soda while diving ;)

This is also addressed in the freediving forum. One word for you...Biofeedback. Anyone can learn to consciously control their heart rate and breathing. Nothing mystical about it, it's based on physiological principles.
 
I self taught myself this and sometimes wow people at the gym. I started thinking one day while running on the elipical machine that my heart rate was higher than it should be. Going by the old rule of 220 - (age) = Max HR, my Max HR should be 183. Training at the 70% mark meant I should be around 128. The 120 - 140 range was normal for me. For some reason on this given day my heart was running at about 160 bpm.

I was thinking "oh my god" what's wrong with my heart and the bpm kept increasing (anxiety.) I decided to start taking deep breaths (while continuing to run,) and began concentrating (mentally) on bringing my heart rate down. On that day (while continuing to run at the same pace,) I discovered that I could control my heart rate. Within 60 seconds I lowered my heart rate from 168 to 146. By the end of 2 minutes I had lowered it back to 134 bpm.

Deep controlled breathing and concentration is all it takes to self learn this ability. I can now dramatically drop my heart rate by as much as 30 bpm while sitting in a chair, scuba diving or running. It feels great to be able to exercise such control over a vital body function.

I suggest you start by just taking deep breaths and relaxing as you let out each breath. ... Good Luck!

Wow Toodive4. I am impressed I practice yoga breathing occasionaly and am just floored by the fact you got into the 30's. Were you alive? Good for you and its about time I looked into a bio monitor.
 
Practice the Xaler method. It works very well and your not messing with Mother Nature.

Biofeedback is just a big word for the Xaler method, and it works exactly as described. I use it all the time, and my resting heart rate is in the 50's.
 
Biofeedback is the technique or means to "see" or "hear" your body's own signals, thereby INDUCING a relaxation response. For example, if you wear a heart rate monitor and can "see" your heart rate on the visual display, you can learn to consciously control your heart rate. Levitation will be our next lesson! :D
