a regulator which breathed harder at depth (or harder in general) might impact how deeply you were breathing and contribute to more CO2 buildup.

First of all, if you do a search on "skip breathing" you will find that it is not recommended. Second, you have received some good advise and things to look into. Thirdly, I will sometimes get a reverse sinus squeeze if I am a little congested. It really hurts a lot. So, if I even think I might be a little congested, I take a single sudaphed about a half hour before I go diving. It works for me, but always be careful about taking meds when you dive.

I discussed it with my doctor before I began taking the sudaphed. Although he isn't particularly familiar with diving, I was concerned about taking a decongestant along with my blood pressure meds. In my case, using decongestants are OK because of the type of blood pressure medication I take. Some blood pressure meds recomment not taking certain decongestants.
