I would like to hear about your experiences with operators, accomodations, dive sites, etc.

Thanks,

Not lately. I was on a live aboard, the Santa Barbara, out of San Carlos back in July of '88. We made most of our dives near Martir Island, which is a long haul from San Carlos. We only made one dive near San Carlos, it didn't impress me, but other sites might be better. I can give you more details when I get home and have access to my log books.

Sadly, the Santa Barbara was lost at sea on January 1, 1989 at about 2 AM with only 2 survivors.

My gf and I have only been diving for about a year, and got certified in San Carlos. We have done about 50 dives around San Pedro since then (in fact, we'll be diving the area for Memorial Day weekend).

There are several dive ops in San Carlos..Gary's and El Mar are the two I have met with. We dive frequently on the Bravo thru Aqua Sports in Phoenix.

How you like the diving will be primarily based on your expectations, I think (and the dive op, of course). The Sea of Cortez is young, so there is but one reef in all of Cortez and its no where near San Carlos. What there is though, is abundant fish life, lots of sea lions (near the island), and while I have yet to see them, I hear there are Whale sharks, hammerheads, and numerous other large fish.

For land based hotels, the two most popular are San Carlos Plaza (nice, but -way- overpriced IMHO) and Plaza Los Glorias (?) located right at the marina.

At first I thought you were all talking about San Carlos in Bahia Magdalena on the Pacific Coast of Baja. I didn't see any sign of divers there (other than the bottles on my vessel for when we hit Cabo and the Gulf of California) on my visits last winter.
