Heh- I once had one try to tell me I could not dive without a "console". It was amusing as I was using an analog SPG and a wrist mounted bottom time and compass.......

It's always good to have a consol. If you get a leg cramp, they can be effectively used as a paddle...especially those great big ones!

Thay can be used as a drag anchor.

When put on the ehd of a hose that is 40 inches or longer in length they even make a fair weapon.

Walter:
His training was inadequate.

Maybe but his inadequate training goes back to his parents. I don't know if we could blame training standards for this one.

TheRedHead:
Don't get me started on over zealous DMs. I had one who insisted that I analyze my Nitrox in my doubles before taking a practice dive in a 15 foot pool. :shakehead

Maybe he thought it was hypoxic nitrox:shakehead

At the same shop:
Early in the day, the guy filling tanks wouldn't put nitrox in my "air only" (O2 clean...) tanks because they didn't have a big ugly nitrox band.
Later in the day, the DM on the boat wouldn't put air in my "nitrox only" tanks because the VIP sticker said nitrox.

...same set of tanks.

I don't know when PADI tossed them out, but in 1977 PADI's standards were pretty good (I have a copy). By the time I started diving (1983) they were already the joke of the industry.
I would love to see those.
I have a PADI manual from my Father-in-law that has a copyright date from 1978-1984 on it and its no different to the OW now, except all the pictures of divers in it are wearing horse collars or wings.
I am quite keen to see what has been thrown out or dumbed down.

Walter:
Did you do it?

No, I told him it was ridiculous. I think he was a DM in training.

:D I've seen them used several times by instructors to pull down floaty students back to the platform. Sort of of like "student balloons" if you will :shakehead

Hemlon:
The "standards have slipped" arguement is no different than "I walked three miles in the snow to school" arguement.
Of course, since the server crashed there may be some stuff missing if he does a search on this topic.
I for one am finding this an interesting discussion, I hope it continues.

This is not in question.

Next time you're in Florida, drop by the house. I also have a set from '72.
