Yup. Supply and demand. Everone wants to dive the new cool wreck.

You'll notice that a lot of shops that might have run to the Chevron rig are now running to the Big O' because they can get a few more bucks.

Give a couple years and thought interest will still be there, the newness will have worn off some and shops will be competitive on price then.

Don't forget to factor in the risk involved with taking OW divers to a site over 200 feet deep--not the divers on Scubaboard, but those that don't know a damn thing about buoyancy control, depth limits, or safety stops.

I know there are charter boats that make a killing...no doubt. Throw 40 people on an ancient fifty-foot boat at $145 a head, and you're going to make a killing. And I know the expenses associated with running a fast six-pack, and I promise you no one's getting rich--especially this time of year. Keep in mind that the expenses go beyond just the gas. It includes insurance, slip fee, boat payment--all of which must be paid every month whether we dive or not. Then factor in the repairs and maintenance, and it begins to add up. After all that, then hopefully you get to pay your mortgage, utilities, etc...

I'm not crying the blues and I'm not on the way to the poorhouse (yet) but I promise you no one works a charter to get rich. I work so that others can have a hell of a time diving and want to come back over and over. If you do what you enjoy, it's never work.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've just had the Ferrari detailed, and I promised Muffy we'd dine at the country club this evening.

Oriskany Divemaster--OK---I am going to be there in late March and again in early June and I want to go to the Tmberholes and to the Oriskany and the deep ledges---have Aqua Master--will dive.

Mike S, I like your analysis. Thank you.

Scuba-Jay:
Jesus...now my head hurts!! SIN Theta huh??? :11: :11: :11:

I computed it with COS instead of SIN to check my work, but at 45 degrees, COS and SIN are equal. (see below)

|\
|..\
|....\
|......\h
|O......\ 157' (deck width)
|..........\
|............\
|______45*\
---A

COS Theta = A/h
COS 45 = A/157
A= 157 (SIN 45)
A= 157 * .7071
A = 111 (height of top of flight deck (from sand) at 45 degree angle).

Water depth to sand = 212 (+/-)
Height of flight deck. = 111

But Like I said, at 45 degrees, the value of COS and SIN are equal. All other degrees they are inverted from each other. However, you know now the length of both sides of your triangle, So the hypotenuse can be verified using Pythagorean Theorem.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
......__________
c= /a^2 + b^2
......______________________
c= /111.0158^2 + 111.0158^2
......______________________
c= /12324.5078 + 12324.5078
......______________________
c= /12324.5078 + 12324.5078
......___________
c= /24649.156

c= 157 (width of flight deck). :D

Mike you geek you need a job....while the "O" is a nice dive once you have dove it a couple of times it's ...well... I won't say it's boring but the island is only so big and you want to see more so tech comes into play then....the area has alot of nice wrecks and such that I myself would as soon dive....take the Avocet...my last dive on it was great, vis was 100+, tons of baitfish and it looked like a cuda condo. So while the "O" is the drawing card stay a day or two longer and hit some of the lesser know stuff you'll be glad you did.....

Actually that would be a really cool 3rd tank dive to do on the way back in after the Oriskany....

You'll want to dive the Mass on high slack tide though for the best vis. It's close enough to the entrance to the channel that sometimes you'll get a strong current at the site and poor vis if the tide is going out.
As I kind of like diving in Long Island Sound, anything above 6 or 7 feet is good and 12-15 is great vis.

But I take your point on the curent.

Are there any boats that will stop at the Mass?

Well put, Yarg.

What's great about having the Oriskany in the area is it opens the eyes of those who never considered Pensacola a diving destination. We have a very aggressive artificial reef program that's constantly in motion. There hundreds of sites to dive, all closer in than the Oriskany.

Right now they're building a reef that's going to be even larger (in weight) than the Oriskany. Sure it's only bridge rubble, but some of the best marine life inhabit the rubble and it makes for some spectacular diving. For me, diving the old rubble, with its chunks of roadway and cement railing in tact, and center lines still visible is something from some Apocolypse movie.

So as Yarg said, come for the Oriskany and stay for the apocolypse...I mean...and stay for the other sites.

heh... that is the kind of stuff I do at work :) (I sure don't do it at home)

Actually, the Avocent is one wreck I've been wanting to dive.

I want to dive the Big O, but it's depth will keep most folks above the flight deck so we won't be able to see most of it...

While I'll mst likely never dive down to the sand at 212 feet, I'd pay for a mini sub ride down to see her screws if such a trip was available.

OK Oriskanydivemaster, well, how do I get out there, it is beyond kayak distance. You said y'all dive there all the time, how do you get out there?

I will repeat what I said before, most dive boats down there will hardly leave sight of shoreline so it amazes me they even go to the Oriskany which is far deeper/dangerous than many other good dive sites they simply will not visit and when you ask about them they will actually tell you the places don't exist. Wow...

Where I grew up, we said "thank you" when someone gave us exactly what we asked for.

First check out my website for all information. Second, check out a book on manners.
