There are exceptions, But most hardware companies typically suck on the software side of life. The camera manufacturers are a good example of this. Leica, Canon, Hasselblad, Nikon, Sony… All are big. All are tech companies. All make great cameras. But how many of them have any software worth more than a passing glance?
I venture to say that most software companies suck at making good hardware.
 
The issue has to due with WHQL certification and signing, something introduced after the software was written. The companies probably see little value of changing something that basically works.
