Hi, hopefully this is the right place for this question. My son is in high school and completed his open water, AOW and rescue courses last year and applied for a received a transcript through PADI for “college credit.”

He’s currently trying to see if his high school will give him PE credit for the classes (he wants to take different electives) and sent the transcript to his principal, but his principal wants the name of a college that has actually granted credit for the PADI course, preferably in California.

I was hoping that someone here had successfully obtained college credit and would be willing to share.

I have not but I have heard of lots of folks being able to do it for college credit, not sure about High School credit. Please keep us posted.

To meet that transferable college credit, your son's course provider teacher & their address must be BOTH (a)licensed school with that state's DoE, (b) IACET accedited . A quick search shows none for AOW

I'd start with talking to your local community college. The courses are ACE accredited, so they are pretty widely accepted.

If you local college doesn't know/work, I'd contact the big 3 distance learning schools: Excelsior, Thomas Edison State College and Charter Oak State College. I'd bet all three have accepted courses from those programs.

I don't know if this helps, but our son's college in CA (Harvey Mudd College) offered the SSI OW certification course as a PE option during his undergraduate time. It was in conjunction with a local dive instruction school.

When I did my OW, AOW and Rescue Diver courses as a college student, I took them for outdoor rec credits which were a graduation requirement at my university. This was in the mid-90's.

Try Costline Community College in California, and some of the smaller public colleges.

Getting an administrator to commit to a "yes" is like trying ... well ... to get a beauracrat to commit to anything before you make a choice, but the smaller colleges seem more willing.

Ask on their forums if you can find some about ACE credit.

Oh...and talk to local homeschool parents about it (and lical homeschoolingforums) ...they seem to encounter this issie with online courses, and will likely know which local colleges are ACE friendly.

I have. I have a number of credits for PADI courses on my transcript. I couldn’t use them for anything, but they are on the transcript.

Since I’m prior military, my credits are evaluated and compiled by the American Council on Education (College Credit For Students and Learners). All of my CLEP tests, GRE’s, courses I took in the Navy for credit, and my PADI professional level certifications are recorded there, and easily transferred to both my Alma Mater as well as the US Merchant Marine Academy where I am currently enrolled.
