I have heard orcas are very intelligent and sometimes cunning. Just curious to know about their interactions and behaviour with divers.

I've been in the water when orcas were in the area ... as recently as three weeks ago. For the most part, you will hear them but not see them ... they seem to know just how far they need to stay away from humans to be able to see you while you cannot see them. I've never known an orca to approach a diver ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Take it from a guy who resembles a seal........you don't want orcas anywhere near you when diving. Like Bob, I've had them in the area and as close as right in the spot as we got into the boat. Beautiful creatures..........

We had just surfaced from a dive and noticed two boats nearby that were in an area with no reefs or any sort of fishing spots. Curious, we motored over to check it out. On one of the boats was a woman we know who is in charge of the local American Cetacean Society. There was a pod of Orcas swarming her boat, spy hopping, fluke slapping and mating. They put on a pretty good show for us.

I'd suggest looking up Dr. Ingrid Visser. She swims with orcas a fair bit.
It is a dream of mine. I was with Bob up at Norris Rock when there were transient orcas hunting. The sea lions didn't come off the rocks for a while. One of the divers in our group was on a rebreather, and he could hear them.

Given that people last summer rescued an orca that got beached near Vancouver (they put blankets on it and kept it wet/cool) until the tide came in and could swim back out. They know what we are.

Also suggest searching for Dave Riggs and the Bremer Bay Aggregation off the south coast of Western Australia. Fave has some amazing pics and does some awesome work with our orcas

Not all orcas are the same. Some orcas may allow for some interaction, while getting in the water with others could be a very very bad idea. Complex animals have complex psychologies. Even ones that interact with humans on a regular basis sometimes turn on and kill a person they know quite well.

The orcas that hunt seals and sealions are used to eating warm blooded animals that enter the sea from land. I'd stay out of the water when they are around. The ones that eat only fish are probably not as likely to get curious or aggressive toward a human, but you never know...

Hopefully, they don't find out about Seaworld.....
