We went looking for her once several years ago with no luck. The wreck is located in a very rocky area and I don't feel it's worth risking damaging a vessel for a few bits of rusted metal as wrecks in shallow water typically are.

So, my short answer would be no.

If either Dennis or John (Sean222) haven't dove a known wreck that is in RI waters, my rule of thumb is that it probably isn't worth bothering with! :D

I appreciate that sentiment. My time to go diving is, like most people's, limited so I do try to spend it on sites that I personally find interesting. This is not to say that there are not good and productive sites that I haven't been to in RI. With that said, I think I am lagging far behind John, as well as others, when it comes to the diversity of sites explored but I have been to most that are "worth" diving. As stated earlier, wrecks in shallow water, particularly on a lee shore, tend to get pummeled by the ravages of the sea and have eventually very few recognisable features. For that reason, we didn't spend in inordinate amount of time looking. But hey . . . there could be something there worth checking out.

Looking to go out to the USS Leyden. Has anyone been out to it lately?

You say lately, which implies that you dived it in the past. If you have could you give us an idea of what you found there? Do you have numbers or ranges? Perhaps the site would be worth exploring further.

I have not been on the wreck. I have to run a motor yacht out to Block Island for a customer and was just wondering if anyone has been there. I will have some down time and access to RIB to dive out of. So, It was just a thought. It seems like most of the info on it's location is questionable at best. I was speaking with a woman from a shop in the Newport area that said they have been there several times but I can't find her contact info. Thanks for the input

Yes I dove her about 10 years ago. The day we dove her it was exceptionally clear and made for a beautiful dive. It is only 10-12' deep and as Dennis aptly pointed out, in amongst rocks which are just below the surface. I would not even attempt it in the boat I own now. The best advice would be to get in there with an inflatable. Also, it needs to be extra calm, read, no swell, which is a rare day out there. That being said, there isn't much left after 104 years on the south side of Block. There are plates, pieces of wood decking, Engine and Propellor. I did enjoy the dive when I did it.
I have some slides that I shot that day. If I get a chance I will scan and post them.

Once again Master Obi Wan comes through for us.;) Why am I not surprised that John has been to that wreck?:D

John; is it around the numbers that Dave has on his site?

Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if he knew what the ship's cook was serving in the galley the day the ship sank..... :D

You give me too much credit. Why is it that I can remember stuff like this but sometimes I go to the grocery store and completely forgot what I went there for?

I will have to check when I get home. It really is a little hairy in that close to shore
so we had a few landmarks and send a person in to find it with snorkel gear.
Believe me, I am a rank amateur next to some of the oldtimers in this game, like
Bill Carter and Brad Luther( and they did it without the benefit of the fantastic electronics we have today).
