Considering it is now basically my back yard and I've been jogging around it lately, I was curious to know if anyone has been diving in Town Lake.. I realize this may not even be allowed (though I haven't found anything stating this as of yet), but I figure someone has splashed in there before and would like to get some feedback if available.

The finger going off the main body of the lake towards Barton Springs looks quite clear, though shallow..

Someone a couple years ago said they did, but I can't recall who it was off hand. I do remember he said that is was not worth the time.

I saw a dude standing on the seat of a canoe in one of those fingers. He was trying to impress his lady (I guess) and ended up flipping the canoe and his lady into the water. They both basically vanished into the vegetation so it actually was deeper than I thought. They shared an "interesting" moment when they broke the surface - and by interesting I mean she was cussing him out in every way possible. Janet and I could not stop laughing...ok it was mainly me, but still...

This guy went freediving there. Lucky To Be Alive, Tells His Tale - The Early Show - CBS News The video is worth watching.

Story I heard was both he and his "female friend" were married, just not to each other. Its possible their situational awareness was compromised :D

That finger is anywhere from 6 to 15 ft deep. Some of the rest of the lake is twice that.

I paddle my Kayak up and down various parts when the weather is better. There's no swimming and probably for a good reason. If you like swimming or diving in Kelp beds then you might like Lady Bird(formerly Town Lake). I think some of those beds are 20-25 ft deep(tall).

Lake Austin is like some of the others. A shallow rocky channel. There might be some treasure hunting in a couple of coves where boaters congregate. Of course, most boaters on Lake Austin have probably never seen a dive flag nor would they know what to do if they saw one. They may not even care. So, I would not surface just anywhere.

dive Town Lake!!! that is the crazy...people don't even eat the fish caught there.....:D plan on using old or rented gear.....you would have to soak it for a week in bleach to get the stench out.....that would be a no from me on diving town lake ;)
