Actually, the Seaquest Surelock manual suggests the use of hard weights. I called Seaquest to question this directive and the rep said that either was appropriate.

I use 20 lbs. of hard weight (1x10 and 2x5) in my WI BC, and have had no problem with wear. I've also found that the hard weight is easier to slide into the sleeves -- especially when slipping it in while the BC is already on. I use an additional 4 lbs. of soft weight in a pocket on the tank strap -- just to fine tune trim.

I vote hard weights. You just want to minimize any sliding that occurs in the pouch. Each pouch has a max weight rating. You'll have to check w/ your manufacture.

I have both hard and soft weights. I bought soft weights because my LDS said that they were more "comfortable". As I wear a 7mm wetsuit, I don't notice any difference, so I paid extra $$$ for nothing.

Hard weights are easier to slide in and out of the pouches when you need to wash/clean the bcd and weight integrated pouches. Also easier to fine tune your buoyancy and trim as you change weight, gear configurations.
