The whole point to the ditch pockets is to send you up in a emergency. So if you balance with a belt then you are impairing the goal some what :).

Disagree. The more weight releases you have, the less weight you need to drop at once, and the more chance you have of controlling an emergency buoyant ascent. If you drop 26 lbs of lead, from 15 ft up, you will be 26 lbs or more buoyant.
 
I have a Ladyhawk and use soft weights. They don't hurt as much and are less likely to break a toe if you drop them. I find they conform better in the weigh pocket and as mentioned before, there is less wear and tear on the pocket.

I haven't worn a weight belt since OW training when I purchased my own gear. I have slim hips and they are quite uncomfortable. There are advantages to wearing a belt or weight pockets.
