Lead shot in soft weight leaches, do doubt about it just rinse them from time to time and see the cloud come from the bag. Given the shape, surface area and inherent abrasion this is logical. So from a purist envionmental viewpoint that's one strike against them.
True that they are safer if dropped.
True that they are more comfortable if bound to your body, like on a belt.
True that they will not last forever, the bag will wear.
Hard weights vary with style there are the weave throughs that let the belt lay against you and the pass throughs that have the belt off your suit putting more pressure on the weights.
Nice molded hardweights are OK for your suit but uncoated ones may eventually create a stain. Open mold poured weights can be hard on your suit if not well deburred.
If diving dry a DUI weight & Trim II is a great addition to your gear. Comfortable, secure and great flexibility in weight positioning.
