This post is to provide thanks to all who have posted information on this board. You may not realize how helpful it is to the novice.
I've read hundreds of your posts and used each one of them to provide education, experience and formulation of my own opinions.

In july my son and I went yp north to perform our OW dives. A camping an diving weekend. What a Blast! My son certified, but I unfortunately tore a muscle in my right side ribs after completing the second dive. Don't know how or when it happened but after ascending from the second dive I found I was having a really hard time breathing at the surface. Didn't know how much pain I was in until I got back on the boat, removed my gear and checked my ribs. I went down on my knees when I pushed on the affected area. I cancelled my other two dives for the next day, but went on the boat to watch my son complete his certification. The lesson learned was it's OK (and most likely better) to call the dive. This I garnered from many posts of your recommendations of calling the dive and not feeling bad about it. I really wanted to tuff it out, but I thought better of it and imagined how bad it could have been had I continued, not only for myself but for others around me.

After getting checked out by the Doc, I went back in August, rereated the first two dives and comleted the two last dives. This was even more enjoyable becuase 1) I wasn't injured and 2) I had some expereince from the last trip. Lesson learned: experience you only get from "time served".

I've changed my mind and reformulated my opionions several times reagrding gear choices, methods, practices etc.. due to information received from other divers, these posts, my LDS and various research.

Since the OW cert, we've enjoyed a few other dives and each one has contributed it's own unique experience. Especially since seeing my first fish underwater. I bet I was completely bug eyed.

Anyways, my thanks to all for your assistance and time taken to provide the most helpful information on this site.

alright, way to go!

and it just keeps getting better

Oh and by the way the OW dives up north were at 8 deg C (46.4F) below the thermocline. Was quite comfortable in a 7mil FJ but am now looking at all I can learn about the dry suit. Another valuable lesson learned was to rent the gear as I'm still changing my mind about what I want to buy.

Sounds llike you're off to a great start. Keep reading and learning. Dive safe and often. Congratulations.

Aweseome story, and it attests to the power of Scubaboard, and of doing your research and homework. Congrats to you and your son.

Another congrats to both you and your son on your recent certifications! Also, as a hs teacher, I love your signature line...

not nearly enough of the "smart" going around!

Enjoy

Congrats on getting certified. I am very happy for you. However, after reading this post on the water temp, I had to go put on a sweater. :11:
