I had one of those heat packs. I never tested it while diving though. My experience with them, combined with what I've read about them, is that if the difference in ambient temperature and the pack is great, they will cool very rapidly. So one of those little packs will lose heat very quickly in cold water. When it does cool, it becomes rock hard. I wouldn't want something rigid in my glove.

just mho

I've used these kind of warmers myself, while hunting. I really like them (and they are quite fascinating to watch when they "activate").
However, that being said, as Aquaphile said, they do turn rock hard....although I find that they turn rock hard shortly after activating them, rather than after they get cold. I would definitely recommend them between dives, but as far as sticking them in your gloves - you may as well stick a hot potato in there! ;)

James Bond: What's this, Q? An underwater ultra-heat retention device?
Q:Put that down, 007! That's my lunch.

well, has anyone tried sealing the dry heat pads in plastic and putting them in booties or gloves? i wonder if you could get enough air in an airtight ziploc bag or in a bag sealed with one of those hot sealers to get them to last for a while. maybe i should just let this go - but it's so tantalizing because my feet get so damn cold!

Has anyone found the best hand or feet warmer? My feet also get cold whenever I do spring dives. Neophrene socks do help alot but am wondering what's available to fit into sock or glove during dives.

The toe warmers do work. They are like the hand warmers, but made for toes, meaning they require very little air to heat up. The only problem I've had with them is that they are tight inside my rock boots and restrict circulation to my toes, which is actually worse that not using the warmers. Circulation is everything. To have a warm core that circulates warm blood to the feet is better than any warmer I've found (except for my electric glove liners).
