Uh, that's why we're having this discussion. If I give a thumbs up then the message is "end the dive." That's pretty clear. My buddies know it and have agreed to it. If I get a thumbs up from you I have to start some guessing game as to which of the ascend meanings you mean... who's communicating in a clear concise fashion and who's sending mixed signals????

My mistake. Trying to remember my signals since I don't get to do much diving up hear during the winter. I will have to check my list of signs when I get home.

My wife who is my buddy most times often has difficulty clearing her ears and uses the thumbs up to ascend slightly to clear her ears than continues her descent.

BTW my wife is proficient in ASL (and I am barely adequate) and we use ASL for alot of non-standard communication. It works great.

If I want to ascend I use make a kicking motion with the first two fingers of my right hand (no, not a frog kick) and then use my index finger to point up. Quite often, when it's time for the safety stop, I signal a one, and then a five and a broad flat sweep of the hands to indicate "level off" to indicate the depth. Then I sign a three (or five, if everyone's on computers) and tap my watch (or where my watch would be) to indicate the time. Obviously, if I am deeper than 30 fsw, I will indicate a deep stop first!
