I've done some snorkeling in hanauma bay. Had an interesting encounter with a curious octopus. How is it for diving, further out, that is?

Pretty marginal unless you go WAY out.

Sometimes the viz is good sometimes not. If there is a sizable south swell, skip it. If its flat, then go early and swim out past the shallow little barrier reef. The thing it has going for it is there are some large mature version of most species common to this area because since they are protected they are not hunted. Makes it nice for fish portraits, since they are used to lots of snorkelers they aren't afraid of you.

Leesa,

You work on the weekends, right? HB is open late on some Saturdays (until 10 p.m.). Maybe we could put together a night dive there? Most snorkelers have gone home then.

Well, actually, the last shuttle from the bottom leaves at 8:30 so we would have to be done by then because I won't haul my tanks up that hill!

Sorry I missed this Becky!

I work Saturdays....but from 7A-11P = no diving fun over the WE, ever :bawling:

Don't want to say too much but that might be changing in the future...wws...

Might I suggest heading out a bit further to Lanai Point and do some wall diving? Obviously not to be done as a shore dive but it is not too much further to sites like Baboons Nose and Sea Cave. Pretty healthy overall and lots of fish and eels. The liklihood of seeing large palagics is higher in these areas as well. This region was the only place that I spotted Devil Scorpionfish and Frogfish during my recent run of 22 dives off southern Oahu. Sure beats Koko Craters or one of the other worn out reef dives, IMHO.

Koko crater....great spot to practice skills...lol

Too bad the walks up and down Lanai or Blow Hole are just too much for my bad knees. :bawling: I know John Hoover dives Lanai, a lot and gets some great pictures out there.

We had a resident frogfish on the Sea Tiger for over 9 Months and right now there is a pitch black one on the bridge....I found a beautiful red one on the San Pedro a while back and often find one on the YO too....Kewalo Pipe, there is a beautiful dark green frogfish - but he has an attitude - will turn his tail towards you if you move in too close.

Devil Scorpions I find all over the place, it is the Titans that I have trouble finding...lol
